Finding someone’s exact age sounds simple until a form asks for years, months, and days rather than an approximate number. A calendar calculation has to account for whether the birthday has occurred, the different lengths of months, and the date you are using as the reference. The aim is to produce a clear date difference, then check that the dates were entered correctly before you use it.
Start with the right two dates
You need a full date of birth and a reference date. For an everyday question, the reference date may be today. For a form, application, school record, booking, or anniversary, use the date named by that organisation instead. A result can change by one day simply because the reference date or local time zone is different.
Before you calculate, write the dates in an unambiguous format. For example, use “14 March 1998” rather than “03/04/1998,” which may mean different things in different places. Check the original record if the date will be copied into an important document.
Understand the calendar approach
An exact age is normally counted in completed calendar years, then completed calendar months, then remaining days. Subtracting the birth year from the reference year gives only a starting point. If the birthday has not happened yet in the reference year, one full year has not been completed.
When the reference day is earlier than the birth day, the calculation borrows days from the preceding month. This is why a date tool is usually more reliable than manually treating every month as 30 days. February and leap years are especially easy to miscount by hand.
Worked example: calculate age from a birth date
Imagine a person was born on 14 March 1998, and the reference date is 28 August 2026. Their birthday has already occurred in 2026, so the completed years are 28. From 14 March to 14 August is five full months, and from 14 August to 28 August is 14 days. The calendar-style result is 28 years, 5 months, and 14 days.
Now move the reference date back to 10 March 2026. The 2026 birthday has not occurred yet, so the completed age is still 27 years. The months and days depend on the preceding calendar dates, not a fixed 365-day shortcut. The example shows why the exact reference date matters.

Check the result before you rely on it
A quick reasonableness check catches many entry errors. First, confirm that the completed years make sense: a person born in 1998 should be about 27 or 28 during 2026, not 18 or 38. Then check whether the birthday has already passed in the reference year. Finally, make sure the month name or numeric order has not been reversed.
If the result will be used near a birthday, use the exact reference date specified by the request. Do not assume that “today” in a web tool is the correct date for a deadline elsewhere. A one-day difference may be meaningful in some processes.
